Research team
The University of Stirling has a vibrant and active research community. Dementia related research is being conducted all over the university in a range of areas of interest. The Dementia Cluster research group meets at regular intervals to exchange knowledge and opportunities to collaborate.
Below are the academics involved in the dementia cluster and their areas of research:
Dementia Services Development Centre
Alison Bowes(Professor of Sociology)
Alison's research interests focus on older people and support and care in older age. She has a particular interest in the provision of long-term care. Recent research has focused on the costs of long-term care (in collaboration with Professor David Bell), smart technology and community care and elder abuse. All of these projects have included consideration of dementia-related issues.
Anthea Innes (Senior Lecturer in Dementia Studies)
Anthea has worked in the dementia field for over a decade, she has led numerous research studies and published widely in this area. Her research focuses on the experiences and views of paid workers, informal care givers and those with dementia. Recent research has examined dementia service provision, including in rural areas, the experiences of people with dementia and their carers in the UK and in Europe, and frontline care work. She was responsible for the devleopment of the first (worldwide) postgraduate programme in Dementia Studies to be offered online and continues to be involved in the delivery of the programme. She has led on international collaborations with Hong Kong and Malta and continues to develop international teaching and research partnerships.
Fiona Kelly (Lecturer in Dementia Studies)
Fiona is an experienced nurse with a strong and passionate commitment to caring for people with dementia. Her PhD focused on the social worlds of people with dementia in hospitalised long-term care, and specifically epxlored how different types of interactions can impact on well-being and expressions of self of poeple with dementia. Currently she is combining her research interests with tutoring for the online MSc in Dementia Studies.
Louise McCabe (Lecturer in Dementia Studies)
Louise is an experienced social researcher and academic. Her research interests focus on people with dementia and the ways in which care can be improved for them. Previous research projects have focused on developing day care services, alcohol-related dementia, and the delivery of quality care by frontline health and social care staff.
Barbara Graham (Research Fellow)
Barbara joined the Dementia Centre in December 2009 after completing her PhD in Anthropology at Queen's University, Belfast. She is currently working on two projects: "evaluating an activity intervention programme for people with dementia" and "the impact of the recent violent conflict in Northern Ireland on teh caring for dementia patients". Barbara works primarily through the Northern Ireland office
Ozzy Dincarslan (Research Assistant)
Ozzy has worked for the Dementia Centre in various roles since 2003 including project development and pilot of the Home Care Practice Licence. She currently assists the research team with fieldwork, analysis and admin support on various projects. Her interests include technology for dementia, design and environment for people with dementia and improving the status of home care workforce.
